Neural stem cell therapy

    Neural stem cells (NSCs) are adult stem cells that can self-renew and give rise to multiple types of neural cells, such as neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes. NSCs play a vital role in repair of neural damages caused by injury and disease. With advancement in regenerative medicine, researchers now can produce NSCs ex vivo and use them in cell replacement therapy for treatment of a variety of neural disorders that are currently no cure. 

    Recently, iPSC derived NSCs have been demonstrated effective and safe in various animal models (mouse, rat, lamb, and monkey) for treatment of CNS disorders, such as ALS, PD, SCI, and stroke. The major advantage of using iPSC-derived NSC for cell therapy is that it is possible to use patient’s own NSCs in transplantation and therefore avoid immune rejection.  One of such an example was demonstrated by a Japanese research group through direct comparison of autologous and allogeneic transplantation of iPSC-derived dopaminergic neurons in monkey with Parkinson-like symptoms.  Their results showed that autologous transplantation of iPSC-derived dopaminergic neurons have much higher survival rate and much less immunogenic reaction compared to those of allogeneic transplantation. 


    Built on CIB’s core competencies in iPSC generation and directed differentiation, we have developed robust protocols to make different neural cells (NSCs, dopaminergic neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes) from our proprietary iPSC lines. Particularly, we have been focusing on development of robust cGMP manufacturing processes for making high purity and large quantities of NSCs for clinical application. In addition, we have developed a streamlined process for making iPSC from patient sample and differentiating the patient-iPSC into NSCs as well as neurons and astrocytes. Our primary therapeutic areas are Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injury, and demyelination diseases.
